The attention of the content consumer must not be exploited

Interview with Michael Höflich, president of the Content Marketing Forum – an association of leading content marketing agencies and trade publishers in the German-speaking countries.

Maciej Chojnowski: What is the biggest challenge in content marketing today?

Michael Höflich: I think the biggest challenge today is that we must not forget that it’s all about quality! In recent years hardly a communication discipline has received as much attention as content marketing. Companies and agencies produce more content than ever before. Given the increasing content overstimulation there is real threat that we experience a content shock – to much irrelevant content. Like all resources the attention of the content consumer must not be exploited but has to be maintained sustainably. If you want to ensure that corporate content is still perceived in the information overload you need exclusive information, emotionally touching stories and real troubleshooting content.

Are there any universal distribution channels that should be included in every CM strategy?

Well, often predicted – now reality: mobile is on the way to be the dominant channel in digital content marketing. iPhone and Co. are already the center of our digital life. For example: 50 percent of all mobile phone users use Facebook already exclusively mobile. And in addition there is news consumption, gaming, e-commerce etc. Furthermore: based on the evaluated context information of the mobile phone it is possible to display the right information at the right time in the right quantity at the right place – content marketing gets context marketing.

In what way can appropriate distribution improve the effectiveness of CM?

Content is important – but good content alone is not a guarantee for success. As there is no shortage of content it is not a good strategy  only to prioritize the creation and perfection of content and to publish this precious good only in own media and on own platforms. The crucial question is how to find as many customers and interested parties as possible to attract them to the company’s topics (and products). Content distribution is highly complex and not a downstream process – it must be integral part of any content marketing strategy.

The digital marketing landscape is constantly evolving and every once in a while someone is proclaiming new trends that are going to change everything. What do you expect in 2016 as regards CM?

Most of the companies consider „real” content as a consisted journalistic piece. But in the age of constant news streams you can’t clearly define the beginning and the end of corporate content any more. Instead of reports, features, commentaries and interviews a story of corporate communications will be made of  Tweets, Snapchat-Snaps, Streams and postings on Instagram and Facebook – particles instead of articles.
